Short course: Applications of Mathematics to Biology
Thursday March 29, 2012
Organizers: Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA)
The Short Course is a special pre-conference workshop that will take place Thursday March 29, 2012. There is no additional cost to participate in the short course for IPC registrants. Limited travel support is available for students.
Abstract:
Most, if not all, areas of mathematics can be applied to biology. Statistics is vital to analyzing biological data. Many biological systems are studied using differential equations and/or numerical analysis. Topology is an area in pure mathematics which studies shapes up to deformations. It is also used to study proteins acting on DNA.
This short course will include lectures as well as hands-on interactive workshops to introduce students to biological applications and the mathematics used to study them.
No mathematics nor biology background will be necessary to understand these talks.
Speakers include:
Erika T. Camacho
Math & Natural Sciences
Arizona State University
Candice Price
Department of Mathematics
University of Iowa
Kimberly F. Sellers
Department of Mathematics
Georgetown University
Anna Maria Spagnuolo
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Oakland University
Magda Stolarska

Travel support is available for high school, college and graduate students wishing to attend IPC. Students who receive financial support to attend IPC are expected to contribute to the conference and/or their home institution by either committing to:
- Make Presentation at IPC OR
- Tutor or mentor students at your home institution
Students applying for travel support must provide the selection committee with the following items to support your application.
- Personal statement: Please tell us about your interest in the mathematical and statistical sciences. What areas of mathematics in particular are of interest to you? What are your future professional goals? Finally, why are you interested in attending IPC 2012? (limited to 2000 characters)
- A letter of recommendation from a faculty member who can address your commitment to mathematics, your academic performance and your desire to pursue a mathematics-related career.
- A letter of commitment from a staff member of an organization where you will provide mentoring or tutoring services as a volunteer. For those who instead choose to present a poster or oral presentation at the IPC, this is requirement is optional, you will just need to submit your abstract.
- Estimated mode of transportation and travel cost.
- Please ask your letter writers to include your full legal name in the subject line and to send their letter to support@ipcmath.org
- We suggest students refer their mentors to this web page.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: January 27, 2012
Priority will be given to early registrants.
Conference attendees are encouraged to submit abstracts for research posters or oral talks. Talks are welcome in any area of mathematics or mathematical sciences, including the teaching and learning of mathematics. Abstracts for oral talks may only be submitted by graduate students, post-docs and professionals.
